Boho Mermaid Luxe Wedding Inspiration
At the start of May every year, if you listen closely, you can hear it – the creaking of hatboxes being opened and the breathless panting of people jumping to retrieve their fascinators from the top shelves. (You can also hear me, screaming with excitement in the distance, but that’s by the by.) May heralds the start of peak wedding season, and with it the loss of free weekends and an onslaught of grassy instagrams.
This time of year is intense and full-on, and no one can blame you for feeling a bit weary as it starts to slow down a little. It’s a lot of travelling, a lot of crying, and a LOT of drinking, stacked on top of each other again and again.
However, you would also be forgiven for feeling a bit uninspired. During the summer, there’s always one cohesive wedding look which always rules the roost: whitewashed, drapey, and rose gold-bedazzled. These are all gorgeous weddings, there’s no doubt about it, but they can easily look samey. Today’s blog post is just the remedy.
When you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise: the complete anti-sameyness of this shoot is why we fell in love with it the moment we laid eyes on it. Styled with the modern bride in mind, it combines the Bohemian and 1970s vibes we’re loving at the moment with old favourites of festivals, mermaids and unicorns, all set deep in the woodland to make it whimsical and wonderful.
"The North Star Club in York provided the perfect setting, as it’s an exclusive location with rustic log cabins and loads of space for yurts or marquee weddings. It’s a gorgeous place, ideal for couples who love a relaxed boho feel close to nature but also wanted elements of glamour and style on the day.
Inspired by themes of Coachella and Tomorrowland, we echoed the carefree spirit and vibrant creativity of festivals with tableware, candles and glasses from Ambience Venue Styling in a stunning rich colour palette that recreated the glistening cornucopia of a mermaid's treasure trove. Deep, moody colours continued over to the flowers, provided by Artisan Florist Leafy Couture. Sarah used bursting hydrangeas to provide a full and lavish arrangement that really wowed – a show-stopper without the jaw-dropping pricetag. The table was finished by JB Creative’s beautifully detailed origami wedding stationery, which hinted at the fun that was yet to come.
Amy George, our make-up artist, also used colour beautifully in the gorgeous look she created for our model. Though it looked carefree and stunningly effortless, it was a carefully curated balance, striking the middle point between soulless whitewashing and OTT adornment. The bride rocked glittery eyes and deep, vampy lips – a fun, slightly fantastical face screaming I’m ready for the best day EVER. Belle & Bride complimented this beautifully with a masterful messy fishtail braid, for a full bohemian bridal look. Our groom, sporting a beard and tattoos, made the perfect match!
And what does a Boheme Queen wear on her wedding day? A The Bridal Emporium find, naturally. Claire’s collection of reworked, vintage-inspired and free-spirited bridal gowns were the perfect wardrobe for the shoot. Eventually, we settled on a dress that looked like it was woven from magic itself, covered in iridescent sequins that caught the light and sparkled right back. The dress, impeccable in its simplicity, was accessorised with Bespoke Vintage Castle goodies. Vintage jewellery, starry veils and glittering tiaras leant just the right level of coy drama.
Zoe’s Fancy Cakes made an incredible set of swoonworthy cakes, cascading with sugar flowers and pearly macarons in rich hand painted tones and magical metallic. Who knew the treasures of a mermaid's sea stash and the starry sky could taste so good?
All of this was captured flawlessly by Jane Beadnell. Her calming, natural approach to taking photos not only produces stunning shots but also means she’s the perfect person to have follow you on your wedding day – not that you’ll even notice she’s following you and capturing your favourite memories!"
